The Vaastu Way

This science helps architects and residents harness the harmony of nature

How often we hear the words: "Oh this house has been very lucky for me," or "Somehow, things haven't worked out since we moved to this place." Recognising that many elements are at play in making a home not just comfortable and beautiful, but a place through which good energy flows, many have turned to the ancient science of Vaastu Shastra.

This science believes that there are basic elements Akaash (sky), Prithvi (earth), Paani (water), Agni (fire), and Vayu (wind) that influence us, and they must be balanced and harmonised. Also, the gravitational and magnetic effects and influences of planets and other celestial bodies affect and control the way we live.

Vaastu Shastra has been grossly misunderstood. It is not merely a matter of rituals and superstitions, as some people think. Dr. Raviraj Ahirrao, of Vaastu Shastra Research Foundation, who also conducts classes in Pune on the subject says, "It is a highly evolved building philosophy in which understanding of direction, geography, topography, environment and physics is important." More and more builders are turning to it too. Kruti Jain of Kumar Builders says, "The essence of good Vaastu is basically good lighting and ventilation and we at Kumar Builders are very particular that our architects take care of these two aspects while designing. Most of our clients look for Vaastu friendly sites and appreciate them."

Sanjay Bisht of Dorabjee Estates confirms that they follow Vaastu as well. "The work starts even before we purchase the plot. Our Vaastu Consultant Mayank Barjatiya first evaluates the plot and only after that a decision is taken," he says.

Gaurav Gadiya of Raviraj Group of Builders seconds that and says, "We always prefer to purchase a plot in the south-west, ensure that the electricity is in the south-east and the water-points in the north-east zone. In this way we endeavor to give our clients a property which is 50-75% compliant." Rajesh Kumar Sankla, Chairman and Managing Director, Siddhivinayak Group says that it is a practical, realistic and detailed science. "I use Vaastu to ensure that light and air are used correctly for the health and harmony of the residents," he says.

The main blueprint for Vaastu homes and sites is the Vaastu Purusha Mandala, a square with a minimum of nine sections representing the nine directions. Each direction has its particular properties which, when taken into account, transform a space that enables peace, prosperity, health, and happiness.

Impulsive planning and unorganised architectural methods, have led to disharmony. Little wonder then that more and more architects are turning to Vaastu Shastra, to undo this. By synchronising all the Vaastu elements an eco-imbalance can be prevented, and therein lies the strength of Vaastu. It simply harnesses the hidden harmony of Nature and brings it into our living spaces.
