Image Matters!

A range of trainers, experts and guides can help you build on your strengths to make a great impression

Projecting the right image can dramatically enhance your personal and career success. How does one acquire an image? Well, today you can create one for yourself, with the help of a whole host of professionals who could hone various aspects of your personality. Many things go into the building of an image: the look, the body, the clothes, the speech… Whether you plan to walk the ramp, try your luck in films, or simply want to make an impression at the workplace and important social events, an array of experts is at hand.

Freshly-crowned Pond's Femina Miss India 2005, Amrita Thapar, says: "Your image speaks about you in a few seconds, and that's what makes it so important." Amrita first got into shape by training at Stretch Gym. This was followed by intensive personality enhancement training with Ritika Ramtri Kumar and a great deal of reading. Herself a designer, Amrita paid special attention to her wardrobe. With the assistance of Suresh Karale and Mina Joshi she put together a look that enhanced her best assets and drew away attention from any negative ones. Viraf Patel, Grasim Mr. India 2005 used valuable inputs from brother Minocher Patel, a well-known trainer, attire from Nivedita Sabu and Deepak Shah, and fitness tips and guidance from Mickey Mehta. Viraf believes that what really helps is an honest look at yourself. "Be naked in front of your conscience," he suggests.

So is it really so simple to metamorphose and transform your image? Apparently it is, if one goes about it the right way. Shakun Sethi model-coordinator and trainer, says that it all starts with the mind. "You have to get your act right and that requires you to be systematic, much like a filing system, one step should follow another," he explains.

The starting point is usually the body. Abhimanyu Sable, of Abs Fitness and Wellness Club says that fitness helps build confidence. "But fitness is a continuous journey with no destination, and so you have to keep going," he emphasises. Dance is another activity which gives the body both grace and poise. Sandip Soparrkar, ballroom dance teacher and choreographer who has trained both the Femina Miss India and Grasim Mr. India contestants, says that ballroom dancing adds both grace and finesse to your personality. "It builds confidence and helps you feel comfortable with your own body and understand its rhythms," he says.

Designer Tanaaz Kothari says that the right choice in clothes goes a long way. "Clothes enhance our personality and allow our image to shine through," she explains. And it's not just clothes that create a look. Even if you have been through a wardrobe rehab and evaluated, pruned and fine-tuned your wardrobe, it won't help if your look isn't total. A total transformation can only come about with the right makeup and styling. Makeup artist Irmala says that corrective makeup can even make a Plain Jane shine and draw attention to herself. Stylist Meetashi Makar adds that when one chooses one's wardrobe it should always blend in with your social and economic background, lifestyle, country base and career. "All these become increasingly important if you don't want the final image to be incongruous," she explains.

The look you project, your attire and body aren't the only dimensions that go into making a favourable persona. "Those are the tangibles," Personality Development Trainer Ritika Ramtri Kumar points out. "It's the intangibles like body language, poise, voice modulation, diction, that also contribute greatly in the process of image building," she says.

Compere and voice-over artist Nico Francis emphasizes the role of your voice, when he asks: "Is your voice really working for you? Your voice gives out big clues about who you are and what you can do." Another aspect of image building that has become increasingly important is memory development and training. "There is no good, or bad memory; there is only trained or untrained memory. Memory skills help us maximize the power of our brain, to become a more integrated and confident person," Manish Gupta of Chrysalis says.

When people feel they look right, are doing the right thing and sound good, they exude charisma and confidence. Small but significant changes in personal branding decisions can give you the final advantage in getting that important job, a date and even marriage with the person you want. Indeed, image matters!
