True or Faux?

These artificial flower arrangements look incredibly real

Fresh flowers have always held their own charm, no doubt. However, today, many home and office owners are drawn to the more practical and equally compelling appeal of faux flowers too. After all, they’re easy to maintain and last for years. Meet Nikki Kang, who has brought her own touch to the world of faux flowers and foliage. As she explains, “Most people dabble in fresh flower arrangements, or buy some faux flowers and put them in a vase. But the concept of making arrangements from artificial flowers is still unheard of here in Pune, and that’s a niche I have tried to fill.”

Relocating to India from Malaysia three years ago, Nikki decided to turn her 15-year-old hobby into a serious business. She imported two containers full of vases, urns and faux flowers – gladioli, roses, anthuriums, Irish bells, sunflowers, poppies, tulips, daisies and marigolds. They are mostly from Japan, China and Taiwan, while the vases come from all over the globe including France, Poland and Spain. From crystal to glass, porcelain and ceramic, Nikki experiments with all kinds of materials. She also has a number of small faux potted plants.

Her arrangements are so life-like; that people often stop to smell the flowers without realising they're faux! Nikki also ‘refreshes’ the arrangements for her clients. If you want to change the look a little, or if the flowers have become dirty, for a nominal sum, she reworks the arrangement by adding and changing a few flowers.
Nikki does dry and fresh flower arrangements too, and combines them with interesting candle stands and other accessories. The dry flowers are chemically treated and last longer than faux flowers. She also keeps in mind the space the arrangement is meant for. In the bathroom she uses water resistant faux flowers. In kitchens she adds fruits to her arrangements; for kids’ rooms she has cute posies and baskets; for bedrooms she fashions lamps with ornate flower arrangements; for the dining room she conjures up beautiful centrepieces in pastry dishes; for the living rooms she prefers English colours such as faded rose, off-white, and peach.

The festive season gets Nikki’s creative juices flowing. For Diwali she may do an ethnic arrangement with several Indian elements, while for Christmas her arrangements use a lot of red, green and white. Her wreaths are ever so popular. For weddings she provides more ornate, formal arrangements, centrepieces and topiaries. She can also do you an arrangement in any container that you take to her – a vase, a dinner plate, a kitchen ladles, almost anything! Nikki teaches people how to make their own flower arrangements. Her Oriental and Victorian flower arrangement classes are very popular.

Nikki’s arrangements are indeed works of art, like fluid sculptures - with a perfect balance of colours, textures and forms. For a closer look, visit
